Central Department of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution

The Central Department of Criminal Investigation and Prosecution/CDCIP («DCIAP») is a body entrusted with the coordination and the direction of the investigation and with the prevention of violent, highly organised or particularly complex crime [article 57(1) of the Statute of the Public Prosecution Service/SPPS).

The CDCIP is led by a deputy prosecutor general on temporary assignment, appointed by the High Council of the Public Prosecution Service, and upon proposal of the Prosecutor General of the Republic (articles 57(2), 59 and 164 of the SPPS).

State prosecutors are also assigned to the CDCIP [article 57(2) of the SPPS] following recruitment pursuant to article 164(2) of the SPPS.

The number of Deputy Prosecutors General and State Prosecutors at the office of CDCIP («DCIAP») is set in the table approved by Ordinance N.º 9/2020 of 17 january, taking into account the High Council of the Public Prosecution Service proposal and considering the provisions of article 60 of the SPPS.

The CDCIP is granted technical and administrative support by justice officials or by officials pertaining to the criminal police bodies’ staff (article 25 of Decree-Law No. 333/99 of 20 August 1999).

Its powers are laid down in article 58 of the SPPS.
