Law degree granted by the Law College, Lisbon University, in July 1978.

Held office as representative (non-prosecutor) of the Public Prosecution Service in Penela.

Began the training period needed to accede to the Public Prosecution Service magistracy in Coimbra, in October 1979.

Assigned to the judicial county of Vila Viçosa as assistant to the district prosecutor in October 1980, afterwhich she held office in the judicial countries of Seixal and Cascais.

While public prosecutor, she was the first president of the Commission for Minors Protection set up in that city.

Promoted to district prosecutor and assigned to the judicial county of Lisbon in January 1994, having held office at the Tribunal da Boa-Hora court, at the Family and Minors Courts, at the Criminal Petty Offences Courts and at the Supervisory Court. Held office of co-ordinating district prosecutor at the Family and Minors Court of Lisbon after it became a specialised competence court.

Member of the High Council of the Public Prosecution Service between January 1999 and January 2002.

Appointed Deputy Director of the Centre for Judicial Studies in October 2002.

Promoted to deputy prosecutor general in July 2004.

Appointed legal auditor by the Minister of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Açores and representative of the Public Prosecution Service at the Regional Section of Açores at the Court of Audit in November 2004.

Joana Marques Vidal took office of Prosecutor General of the Republic on 12 October 2012.
